The Conference of Drama Schools comprises Britain’s 22 leading Drama Schools. CDS exists in order to strengthen the voice of the member schools, to set and maintain the highest standards of training within the vocational drama sector, and to make it easier for prospective students to understand the range of courses on offer and the application process.

Founded in 1969, the member schools offer courses in Acting, Musical Theatre, Directing and Technical Theatre training. Graduates of CDS courses are currently working on stage, in front of the camera and behind the scenes in theatres and studios across Britain.

CDS members offer courses that are:

PROFESSIONAL – you will be trained to work in the theatre by staff with professional experience and by visiting professionals. Students have the opportunity to work in professional theatres and studios.

INTENSIVE – courses are full-time

WORK ORIENTATED – you are being trained to do a job – although courses lead to an academic qualification, including degrees and masters degrees – these courses are practical training for work.

AS OF JUNE 2012

The Conference of Drama Schools (CDS) recently merged with The National Council for Drama Training (NCDT) to form Drama UK, the new body championing quality drama training in the UK. Drama UK will continue to fulfil the functions of CDS and NCDT including offering advice on professional training and accreditation of vocational courses. Drama UK will also provide support to those organisations offering accredited training. At the same time it will act as an advocate for the sector, championing excellence in drama training and encouraging the industry and training providers to continue to work together.

Drama UK is currently in the process of developing a one stop website providing information on drama training for students of all ages. This will be launched in early Autumn. Until then the temporary Drama UK site can be found at www.dramauk.co.uk alternatively you can email j.tisdall@dramauk.co.uk.

From early July the Guide to Professional Training 2013 will be available to download from the Drama UK website. This guide gives information on courses offered by the twenty one member institutions, together with advice on funding, auditions and interviews and links to schools websites.
